Recovering and revitalising indigenous laws

In conversation

  • Professor Val Napoleon, University of Victoria (Canada)
  • The Honourable Chief Justice Debra Mortimer, Federal Court of Australia

This 'In Conversation' event with Professor Val Napoleon will focus on Canadian experiences in the ongoing recovery of Indigenous legal traditions as part of self-determination efforts.

Professor Napoleon is a Professor in (and former Dean of) the Faculty of Law at the University of Victoria, British Columbia and Chair of Indigenous Justice and Governance at UVIC. The UVIC joint degree program in Canadian Common Law (JD) and Indigenous Legal Orders (JID) is the first program of its kind in the world.

In this conversation, Professor Napoleon will give us an insight into how Indigenous laws can occupy space in the framework of a post-colonial legal system, and discuss how Canadian experiences may be relevant to Australian circumstances.
