Justice Wigney was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia on 9 September 2013.

He is also an additional judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory and a judge of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island.

Prior to his appointment, his Honour practised as a barrister, primarily but not exclusively at the New South Wales Bar, for over twenty years.

He was appointed senior counsel in October 2007. He had a broad and extensive practice at the Bar, though he specialised in complex "white collar" crime and civil penalty contraventions (in particular insider trading and other financial market offences, directors' duties, taxation, fraud and money laundering), competition and consumer law, administrative law, taxation and commissions and inquiries.

Prior to being called to the Bar, his Honour worked as a solicitor at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and Clayton Utz. He graduated in Economics (BEC 1985) and Law (LLM 1994, LLB 1988) from the University of Sydney.


Associateship applications

Justice Wigney’s chambers are staffed by two associates on an overlapping basis, with a new associate appointed in January and July of each year.

Please be advised that Justice Wigney has now appointed associates for July 2024, January 2025 and July 2025. The next vacant positions will commence in January 2026 and July 2026. Applications for these vacancies should be submitted between 1 July 2024 and 30  November 2024.
