Justice Yates was appointed to the Federal Court on 30 November 2009.
His Honour graduated in law from the University of Sydney in 1977 and commenced practice as a solicitor that year after completing his practical legal training at the College of Law, St Leonards. He was called to the New South Wales Bar in 1982 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 1997.
